Bulldozing Asian Communities: Freeway Construction and Urban Renewal in Stockton StoryMap

This project explores the systemic causes and impacts of Stockton Crosstown’s Freeway on numerous, vibrant Asian-American enclaves. This StoryMap outlines the:

  1. History of Stockton’s Asian enclaves, particularly, the Chinatown, Japantown, and Little Manila;
  2. Impacts of freeway planning and selection to these enclaves;
  3. Different urban renewal programs the Stocktown Housing and Redevelopment Department carried out; and
  4. Numerous ways of how these communities struggled, resisted and adapted from these losses.
